The first years of a child’s life play an integral role in their development. With a tailored daycare program, children with disabilities can learn at their own pace while having fun with their classmates. Participating in individual and group activities at this crucial age builds the foundation for happy, healthy lives down the road. Below is a glimpse into a day in the life of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers at the Integrity, Inc. daycare center for children with disabilities in Little Rock.
A Day in the Life of Infants
Babies start their day at 7:00 am in our daycare center with a healthy breakfast and a diaper change, then they are free to play until 8:00 am. Then, we do literacy activities before moving on to active learning and outdoor play. Caretakers may provide individualized programs designed to build motor, cognitive, communication, and social skills, depending on your child’s individualized support plan. At 9:20 am, infants may have a morning snack before moving on to interactive floor time and sensory activities.
They can also enjoy walking around in fresh air (when the outdoor temperatures are appropriate) and watching the older kids on the playground. Lunch is served between 10:40 and 11:00 am, followed by naptime and another diaper change. The afternoon begins with a snack, then finishes with another round of the morning’s activities, this time in reverse order.
A Day in the Life of Toddlers
Toddlers begin the day at 7:00 am with a hearty breakfast in our kitchen and then, they have free time to explore the toys and books in our daycare center. The morning activities begin with story time at 7:45 am and circle time at 8:00 am. We then move on to group sensory activities. Toddlers love to place small rocks in containers, ride on the puppy rockers, and spend time in the playhouse.
Roughly an hour of outdoor play time after that gives the kids fresh air, sunshine, and opportunities to explore their world. Group language activities, music and movement activities, and another session of story time bring the kids to lunch at 11:00 am, followed by nap time and a diaper check. The kids finish out the afternoon with a mix of the morning’s activities including outdoor play time, circle time, and personal exploration.
A Day in the Life of Preschoolers
For preschoolers, our daycare center offers two programs for children with special needs. Preschoolers participate in the same activities across the two schedules, but at different times throughout the day. Breakfast, lunch, and nap times are similar to the infant and toddler programs. But language, sensory, movement, and music activities along with story and circle time reinforce the skills taught in the toddler program while emphasizing self-help skills.
Preschoolers are especially active on the playground, using the swings, playing with the hoops and balls, riding on trikes, and digging in sand boxes. They also learn about the world around them through thematic activities based around the seasons, farm life, family, and other fun topics we have planned.
Some children may receive speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, or physical therapy in our dedicated therapy room. Their activities occasionally bring them into the classroom or outside onto the playground to develop their cognitive, communication, social, and self-help skills.
